The Alliance has members in 90 countries around the world. To strengthen the road safety NGO community within different regions, we are setting up regional chapters of the Alliance. These chapters will help NGOs to share challenges that are common within their regions and harness their joint experience to be a more unified voice. The chapters will offer targeted capacity building and amplify the voice of NGOs together.
The Africa Chapter of the Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety was launched in November 2018 as a means of uniting road safety NGOs in Africa more closely, harnessing their joint experience, building their capacity and amplifying their advocacy voices with their governments. The Africa region’s economy is growing faster than any other continent’s. Regrettably, this success brings some serious and painful consequences: Africa has 2% of the world’s cars but 16% of the world’s road deaths, and more than 300,000 people lose their lives in road traffic crashes in the region every year, while thousands more are injured.
NGOs are at the forefront of efforts in Africa to save lives on the roads—working with communities and government, leading projects and campaigns, and advocating for road safety policies.
The need to grow the NGO movement in Africa is urgent: to raise their collective voice about the problem, advocate for sustainable solutions, and strengthen their capacity to deliver evidence-based programs, road safety management, financing, and research.
The Alliance is well-placed to co-ordinate this action. With 60 NGOs across 25 countries in Africa, we equip, mobilize, and connect NGOs. The Africa Chapter will enable us to step up action in the continent.
We have been consulting with our NGOs in Africa on an action brief that is based on a recent survey of NGOs regarding their perspectives on the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011–2020.
The action brief will inform the Africa Chapter’s work. The brief calls for governments to:
The activities of the Africa Chapter are defined in the strategic plan, which has been based on a needs assessment completed among Alliance member NGOs in the region in early 2019. It will include networking opportunities, joint campaigns, and training opportunities.
The Alliance provides coordination for the chapter but members are responsible for its sustainability.
