About us

The Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety is a network organization of more than 300 NGOs in 100 countries and acts to make the world’s roads safe for all.

We strengthen the voice of the people by supporting NGOs in advocacy for safer roads, victim support and sustainable mobility and advocate at local and global level at the highest levels of decision-making. We put the experiences, and grassroot perspectives first, work strategically and evidence based and believe that meaningful participation of NGOs in the decision making process is a key strategy to halve the number of deaths and fatalities on our roads.

In 2018, the Alliance launched the Africa Chapter of the Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety (Africa Chapter). With 83 member NGOs representing 31 countries in the African region to date, the Africa Chapter provides not only a platform to further strengthen civil society in Africa and empower its role, but to also address the regions and NGOs’ distinct challenges and needs.

The Alliance Africa Chapter aims to empower, strengthen and support local African NGOs work in road safety, and ensure that they are meaningfully engaged in reaching the target of a 50% reduction in road traffic related injuries and fatalities set for the new Decade of Action for Road Safety, 2021-2030.

The Africa Chapter works under the umbrella of the Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety and its strategic plan and governance. Its work adheres to the strategies of the Global Alliance’s three action pillars: 1) networking and sharing, 2) advocacy and accountability and 3) capacity building.

The Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety is looking for an Africa Chapter Coordinator to work closely with NGOs, raising their voice to improve road safety in Africa and support the implementation of our Africa Chapter strategic plan. The Alliance Africa Chapter Coordinator will be part of the Alliance global team and work to support implementation of the overall Alliance vision and mission.

Role

The Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety Africa Chapter Coordinator will support the Director of Global Activities in the effective implementation of the Alliance Chapters mission, particularly the day-to-day implementation African Chapter strategy and work plan.

The Coordinator will actively support the planning and implementation of all Africa related activities and as a team member of the global group provide inputs and insight to the Alliance global and regional work.

Specific responsibilities

  • Support the timely, efficient and effective implementation of the Africa Chapter strategic plan, including fine-tuning the action plan, as needed, to ensure alignment with emerging regional needs and priorities
  • Member management and growth of NGO membership in Africa
  • Coordination of Africa Chapter Advisory Committee work
  • Stay abreast of regional and in-country road safety/safe mobility policy context and key developments
  • Assist the planning, implementation and follow up of Alliance trainings and events, including sending invitations, keeping participant lists updated, administrative tasks during events and trainings and oversight and evaluations
  • Assist implementation of the global/regional advocacy strategy, including background research, messaging, roll out of seed grants, feedback and compilation and analysis of reports
  • Support communication tasks, such as preparation of newsletters, brochures, website and social media content/management
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders in the region, to ensure coordination and alignment of activities 
  • Represent the Alliance chapter in relevant events and meetings, as appropriate
  • Assist in reporting (programmatic) to funders specific to Africa, and development of proposals
  • Support general Alliance administrative and financial duties

What we’re looking for

  • You possess excellent networking and interpersonal skills
  • Proven ability in program coordination and implementation
  • Fluency in written and verbal English (required) and French (preferred). Experience working in a multilingual environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Appreciation the role of the of NGOs and civil society in implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals
  • Knowledge and experience in the field of road safety/sustainable mobility. Specific experience in Africa is a plus.
  • Comfortable with virtual work, proactive, organized, self-managing, and a team player.

More information

  • Full time position, virtual work. You must be available to participate in meetings with Alliance staff and members during traditional business hours.
  • Project funded. Funding secured till April 2023. Extension is expected.
  • The position is home based – within the Africa region.
  • Starting date: as soon as possible.
  • Regional travel may be required.
