Our impact

The Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety (the Alliance) was established in 2011 by road safety NGOs, under the auspices of the World Health Organization, to serve as a central coordinating mechanism to amplify the voice of road safety civil society.

Our vision is a world where every person has access to safe, affordable, accessible, and sustainable safe mobility using the road systems, where no one dies or is seriously injured as a result of a road crash.

The Alliance is the leading global road safety voice for civil society. We mobilize and convene our network of NGOs to make our vision a reality. We work through three interconnected pillars: strong network; advocacy and accountability; and capacity building.

Strong network

We build a network that is growing in size and credibility and create partnerships that open opportunities for our members. As our network grows, community demand for safe roads grows around the world.

We represent 410 NGOs, growing our network by an average 10.5% each year.

Our NGO network spans 109 countries in every region: that’s more than half of the world’s countries.

We work with xx UN agencies and 34 other partners to solve problems across the Sustainable Development Goals. We have UN ECOSOC consultative status.

We have convened 1,400 NGOs, policy makers, subject experts, and corporate partners through Global Meetings in eight countries in five regions of the world.

We engage our 27,000 social media followers and subscribers to mobilize advocacy and amplify the voice of local NGOs.

The awareness that the Global Meeting raised helped us gain traction at the highest level to generate a positive effect on road safety. Today, our death toll on the roads is 13% lower than last year, despite ongoing vehicle growth.”

Advocacy and accountability

NGOs and dignitaries at the 3rd Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety add shoes to a pile representing the number of people killed in road crashes every day worldwide.

We lead NGOs in globally-coordinated locally-implemented advocacy for actions that are proven to save lives and make our streets safe for everyone.

We mobilize NGOs for campaigns that reach at least 45 million people every year.

We have invested US$1.05 million in 756 NGO grants in 90 countries.

We have enabled NGOs to track 144 government commitments in 36 countries.

At least nine intersections have been made safer as a result of grassroots NGO data collection of 195 Mobility Snapshots.

We have led four research projects with our NGOs commissioned by the World Bank and High-Volume Transport.

Our work has been featured in the New York Times and Forbes and academic journals including the British Medical Journal Injury Prevention and the Journal of Road Safety.

I am inclined to refer to [the Accountability Toolkit] as the “secret weapon,” given its masterful articulation that provides lucid guidance, which I believe will effectively lead us toward the accomplishment of our overarching objectives.

Capacity building

We equip NGOs with expertise and experience to influence policy and action, embedded in evidence, in their countries and build their professional credibility.

We have delivered 118 capacity-building sessions to equip 1,635 participants.

We have developed and implemented 19 capacity-building programs and tools.

We have produced 12 publications and six journal articles to strengthen NGOs’ work and amplify their voice and credibility.

151 NGOs in 67 countries are using the Accountability Toolkit to hold their governments accountable for saving lives.

Our Empowerment Program and Accountability Toolkit have both received the prestigious Prince Michael International Road Safety Award.

Working with one Alliance, you get to work with 400 NGOs in 100 countries.
