Needs assessment informs design for new Alliance Empowerment Program

As announced in Brasilia in November 2016, the Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety has launched the Alliance Empowerment Program, a capacity building initiative to help Alliance members improve their work on road safety. Through generous funding from FedEx, the Alliance will make an important contribution to the Sustainable Development road safety target of cutting the number of road fatalities in half by 2020. Ultimately, the program is expected to improve the quality and impact of Alliance members’ work to make road safety a priority in all settings, to reduce road traffic crashes, and to save lives. We expect that our multi-year training program will strengthen the ability of Alliance members to design, plan, fund, deliver, and evaluate effective programs.

The first step was to reach out to our membership to assess current strengths, weaknesses, and needs for capacity building. An external consultant with extensive experience was engaged to conduct the initial learning needs assessment and make recommendations towards the specific content and design of the program. All Alliance members were invited and encouraged to participate in an online survey which formed the basis of the assessment. Survey results were complemented by a series of in-depth interviews with NGOs selected as a representative sample of the entire membership. Please find the summary learning needs assessment HERE.

We are now shaping the specific components of the program, so please stay tuned for updates. You can follow progress on the Alliance Empowerment Program page of our website HERE.

To each of you who contributed such important feedback and input to this work: a heartfelt thank you! Your views and voices will have a direct impact on the shape of our capacity-building activities.
